Description
The international security order is being challenged by struggles to cope with weapons of mass destruction and by seemingly intractable problems of regional instability and conflict. Can restraint regimes, such as nuclear arms control or the nuclear nonproliferation regime, be preserved and improved? Can long-standing crises over nuclear programs in Iran and North Korea be effectively addressed? What are the implications of chemical weapon use in Syria? In connection with regional conflict, can conflict resolution restore peace and bring some order to war-torn regional environments? What is to be done about the unending wars and protracted civil conflicts in Iraq, Syria, Libya and Yemen? How can the associated refugee crisis be addressed? What constructive role can outside powers play in resolving regional conflicts? The 58th ISODARCO Course will explore these issues, with particular focus on the Middle East and Africa.
